Art insurance

In the field of personal insurance, art insurance belongs to the group of property insurance policies that provides special insurance conditions for insuring paintings, photographs, collections, sculptures, and in some cases also furs and jewelry. Standard home contents insurance does not adequately cover these items in terms of specific risks, amount, and scope. Art insurance can be viewed as a hybrid between home contents and transport insurance.

An art insurance policy contains special insurance conditions for insuring paintings, photographs, collections, sculptures, but in some cases also furs and jewelry. It supplements standard household contents insurance, which is not designed for coverage of such value and scope.

Art insurance is a so-called all-risk coverage. This protects the insured art objects against damage, destruction, and loss as a result of all hazards.

Typical examples of damage

  • Theft:
A burglar steals a valuable sculpture from the policyholder's collection. The fine art insurance reimburses the actual cash value or replacement value of the stolen sculpture.
  • Fire damage:
A fire in the house damages or destroys a collection of valuable vases. The fine art insurance covers the costs of restoring or replacing the vases.
  • Water damage:
A burst water pipe in the policyholder's apartment damages valuable paintings. The art insurance covers the costs for the restoration or replacement of the artworks.

Art insurance is suitable for collectors, art enthusiasts, museums, galleries, and other institutions that own valuable works of art. Art insurance can also be of interest to companies that use works of art as part of their business equipment.

Combination with a household contents insurance or building insurance is recommended. An art insurance policy can also be useful as a supplement to a transport insurance policy to secure art objects during transit.

When taking out art insurance, an accurate inventory list must be created, which should be updated regularly.
